Each month, our Advocacy Committee answers your questions about the AD 10 policies (aka, your terms and conditions of employment).

Hello. I’m Mike Peragine, chair of APSA’s Advocacy Committee. I’m answering your question about the workload issues on the committee’s behalf.

Questions? Submit them anonymously here. We will answer them in a future monthly advocacy corner issue. For an immediate answer, please contact us.

Could you please confirm whether APSA members are entitled to personal days, and if so, how they can be used?

Yes, APSA members at SFU are entitled to two paid personal days per calendar year after completing their probation. These days may be used at the employee’s discretion for personal reasons not covered by other types of leave, and, where possible, two weeks’ advance notice is preferable. Unused personal days don’t carry over to the next year and aren’t paid out if employment ends.

Here’s what the language says: Effective the date of ratification/approval by both parties, in addition to all other leaves in sections 3-10, all Employees are entitled to two (2) personal days without loss of pay per calendar year (pro-rated for part-time status). Where feasible, Employees shall provide their supervisor with at least two (2) weeks’ notice of a personal leave day. Such leave requests will not be unreasonably denied.

I’m an APSA member in a high-level position. I’ve been hearing that a lot of my colleagues have been made APEX. Is there anything I can do if SFU determines that I am no longer APSA?

Thank you for reaching out to us. As this is a case-specific question, my advice would be to contact the APSA office. There are pros and cons to moving into an APEX role that you may not know about, and we’re happy to discuss them with you so you understand the changes. Speaking us is always 100% confidential.
